William Barkshire

Executive Chairman and Founder of Carbon Connect Limited

A Permanent Resident based in Hong Kong since 2009, William Barkshire is also Managing Partner and Founder of GBA Partners Limited and Chairman of its global network of advisers. He has over 30 years of financial services sector experience covering Asia (including China), Europe, India, Middle East, and the United States. His family’s long relationship with Hong Kong was first established in 1903.

Prior to founding GBA Partners he served as Head of Sales and Strategy for Greater China at FNZ, a leading wealth technology unicorn with USD 1.5trn AUA whose investors include Temasek.

He has also held senior management positions at a number of organisations including at Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange (backed by leading Chinese State Owned Enterprises) as Co-CEO, London Stock Exchange as Director of Corporate Strategy and CEO’s Committee Member, London Clearing House as MD of Strategy and EXCO member, Australian Stock Exchange as Senior Adviser, and London International Financial Futures Exchange (now ICE Futures Europe). He commenced his career at SG Warburg (now UBS).

He sits on the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce’s Financial Services and Treasury Committee and its Asia, Africa & Middle East Committee and is an active Member in various committees of the Fintech Association of Hong Kong. He has served as a Visiting Professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University, as a member of the Treasury Markets Association and as an Expert Commentator on China Radio International (Beijing).

He is also a Fellow of the Hong Kong and Securities Institute (HKSI) and a Freeman of the City of London. He is an active Kindness Walk Leader for ImpactHK, a charity focusing on helping those experiencing homelessness and addictions, and is also on the Advisory Board of the Carbon Neutral Club, an NGO based in Hong Kong in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

He holds a BSC (Hons) degree in Economics and Business Economics from Southampton University (UK). He also holds a HKGFA-HKUST Certificate in Sustainable Finance, and a HKU Certificate for CFA ESG Investing.

Dr. Chun Kai [CK]

Executive Director

Based in Hong Kong, Dr. CK is an expert in climate change, environmental studies and energy administration and security in China. He is a Research Fellow at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and an Associate Researcher at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University.

He is responsible for driving CityU’s MBA ESG curriculum and steering the Hong Kong Chapter of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). He also lectures the Certified ESG Analyst (CFA) programme at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and is Expert Advisor for UNESCO’s Inclusive Policy Lab and the SDSN Academy. He is also Advisor to the incubation program at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) and an Academic Adviser for the award-winning documentary series “No Poverty Land”.

He has held Visiting Fellow roles at Oxford University’s China Centre, the David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies, and the Beijing Institute of Technology. He has also served in leadership positions as Director of International Development at an HKEX-listed education company and Research Associate at King’s College London’s European Centre for Climate, Energy, and Resource Security (EUCERS).

A respected contributor to professional literature, he serves as a topic editor for Frontiers in Environmental Science, and Frontiers in Sustainable Energy Policy, and as a reviewer for prestigious journals such as Nature Energy, Applied Energy, and Renewable and Sustainable Energy Review. He has cooperated with seasoned diplomats and scholars including Vaclav Smil (Bill Gates’ science advisor), Kevin Rudd, Meghan O’Sullivan, and Joseph Nye.

He earned his Ph.D. in Geographical Political Economy from the University of Durham and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
